Recent UNOCHA Report: At least 65 million people need assistance in West and Central Africa

The West and Central Africa Regions are marked as the most risk-prone regions in the world according to the UNOCHA report, published on 21 January 2021. Highlighting several conflicts in the regions including the Bokoharam insurgency, the Anglophone armed conflict in Cameroon, the Central African Republic armed conflict, etc.
Including Climate change in a number of difficulties in the two regions, UNOCHA stated that extreme poverty, rapid population growth, and insecurity are driving high levels of vulnerability in the West and Central Africa, which account for one-third of global humanitarian needs.
On their official website, UNOCHA state “West and Central Africa are among the most risk-prone regions in the world. Climate change, extreme poverty, rapid population growth and insecurity are driving high levels of vulnerability. Violent conflict, forced displacement, food insecurity, malnutrition, epidemics and environmental shocks continue to devastate communities. 2020 was marked by worsening needs, deteriorating conflicts and the consequences of COVID-19. Sixty-five million people depended on humanitarian assistance — this was a record high, and 20 million more people than estimated at the beginning of 2020. One third of global humanitarian need is in West and Central Africa.”
The Human Rights and Legal Research Centre joins The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs to call for more humanitarian action in the two regions.
