Cameroon: At least five persons killed and houses burnt as Fulani herders clashed with locals of Nwa subdivision, North West Region

Suspected Armed Fulani herdsmen have reportedly attack, killed, and set houses ablaze in some villages in Nwa. This is because of growing tensions between the Funlani Herders and locals of Nyang, Ntong 1, and Ngeng villages in Nwa subdivision of Cameroon’s North West region. During the attacked as reported by Mimi Mefo Info, the suspected Fulani herdsmen stormed these villages, killed at least five persons and burnt houses and markets.
The locals who fled the area as a result of the attack which began on 21 February has led to forceful displacement of women and children to bushes. The Mimi Mefo Info and Cameroon News Agency (CAN) platforms reported that, the attack, which began from Nyang village before extending to other villages, took place between 21 and 23 February 2021.
The Fulani herders and farmers problem especially in the North West Region of Cameroon has witnessed an upsurge during the Anglophone armed conflict. The clashes is also going on in Bum subdivision, where at least two persons have reported been killed recently. However, with these growing tensions, the administrative authorities in these areas have remained silent on tensions between farmers and graziers.
Mimi Mimi Mefor Info has also reported a testimony from a native of Nwa “They have killed already five people. Apart from the two fathers that were killed on their sickbed, my elder sister’s two houses around the market square have also been burnt completely with everything inside and she is a widow,”
Human Rights and Legal Research Centre is concern on the tensions between the herdsmen and farmers in the North West region of Cameroon. The situation should be address with urgency as it may generate another insecurity in the region in addition to the already existing armed conflict.
