Given an upsurge in violence and insecurity in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon, the Senior Divisional Officer for Donga Mantung has ordered the closure of borders between Nigeria and Cameroon within his area of command. The order is coming at a time when the military and separatists fighters are battling mostly in the Kumbo Sub Division of Bui Division and the weapons are believe to be imported through Donga Mantung

Reminding the public of certain laws, including the constitution, Mr NKWENTI SIMON NDOH, the Senior Divisional Officer in the communique said the movement between Nigeria and Cameroon within the terrestrial and trivial borders of Donga Mantung with Taraba States fo the Federal Republic of Nigeria stretching from Yang of Nwa Sub Division to Buku of Ako Subdivision have been closed till further notice. The closure took effect on 21 May 2021 when the order was signed and communicated to the public.

Revealing in the communique, the Senior Divisional Officer also reveals the reason for closing the borders with Nigeria is to maximise the fight against the entry into Division from neighbouring areas of illegal weapons, ammunition, drugs and other dangerous substance that promote insecurity on persons and property.

It is worthy to note that there is an exception to the banding of movement between the two countries within the specified areas. The Communique states that “.No individual, group of persons or goods may transit into Donga Mantung except with the express authorization of the competent authorities” He furthers states that any individual or group of persons caught violating the provisions of this order shall be persecuted in accordance with the law in force.

In other to effectively implement the order, the Senior Divisional Officer further instructed the Divisional Officers fo Nwa and Ako Sub Divisions, the Force of Defence and Security Donga Mantung, Mayors of Nwa and Aka Councils and the Traditional FONS of these border localities to strictly execute the above orders.

This border closure by the Senior Divisional Officer will mean the locals will suffer the consequences because the Niegbouring Taraba State is their major economic partner as they are more closed to them than even Cameroonian major towns.
