The Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA) calls on interested writers to submit applications for a writing contract. This is part of a project with Swisspeace to produce a book titled “The Unheard Voices of the Anglophone Crisis”.
PURPOSE
Several efforts have been made by the government, Civil Society Organizations, International Organizations and individuals to see a return of peace to the restive Anglophone Regions and the nation as a whole since the outbreak of the Anglophone crisis. Many internally displaced persons and refugees still find it difficult to regain their homes, fearing violence. The fundamental preoccupation here is why are there still some major drawbacks despite all efforts to see a return of peace? We observed that all actors involved in the peace process in the context of the Anglophone crisis have not been duly consulted. It is for this reason that we want to come up with a comprehensive scientific document that will carry a multifaceted analysis of issues plaguing the Anglophone Regions of Cameroon, thereby proposing lasting solutions. This document will further serve as a reference for researchers all over the globe and a store of the history of Cameroon for posterity.
There is continuous documentation by CHRDA and other Human Rights and Humanitarian Organizations, on the human impact of the ongoing crisis on the population. The Major National Dialogue was organized with the purpose of initiating a peace process. The offspring of that event is yet to be established but what can be discerned is the total absence of important factors for such a process. From the Major National Dialogue to the ongoing reconstruction and rehabilitation process which has been initiated, there has been a disregard for the identified population who form part and parcel of the crisis. These ‘unheard voices’ of the current crisis, which we have identified, such as, (refer to unheard voices) have usually been left out of these processes. Issues relating to participation and inclusion of these ‘unheard voices’ have been largely missing in the steps adopted by the State.
This project, therefore, brings to light, the experiences, traumas, failures and effects which the current crisis has had on the population, whether negative or positive. It attempts an exploration of the hidden human experience behind the reporting and showing the human faces and voices behind the turmoil that is the Anglophone Crisis.
Talking to these people provides a platform for their voices to be heard at a larger stage. While not being overly ambitious and promising that this present project might bring an end to the ongoing crisis, what the project aims to achieve are outlined in the specific objectives below.
- Provide a medium for the target groups to unburden and heal.
- To raise awareness of the human experiences, evoke sympathy at the domestic and
international scenes.
- To bring a level of pressure on the government of Cameroon to propose lasting solutions to the crisis.
- Provide inputs into a truth-seeking process and provide reflections for the future.
Considering, and beyond the objectives, the project provides a framework and pathways for identification and assessment of human needs of the ‘unheard voices’ population, in the future, especially in negotiation and peacebuilding processes.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Since this is a research project, data will be collected from the field by data collectors. The writers are responsible for developing creative content from the already analyzed data gathered from the field for each of the various topics:
- A brief historical evolution of Cameroon. Focus will be on the economic evolution of Anglophone Cameroon with emphasis on the economic stifling.
- Motivations, experiences and aspirations of combatants and ex-combatants
- Impact of the Anglophone crisis on the population (captured in poetry, pictures, drawings, short stories etc.)
Socio-cultural, Political, educational, economical
- Human Rights and Humanitarian situation
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
The following criteria will be taken into consideration:
- Be a Cameroonian female or male
- Have at least a Bachelor’s degree in the Social Sciences, Arts and Law or other related fields
- Be an author of any creative piece ( poem, novel, short story)
- Be fluent in spoken and written English. Knowledge in French is an added advantage.
- Must be able to work effectively in a politically sensitive environment and exercise discretion, impartiality and neutrality.
Interested writers should submit their files comprising an original writing sample which reflects the writer’s creativity, a written application, Curriculum Vitae, photocopy of identification card and other supporting documents to ‘genderofficer@chrda.org’ or deposit at CHRDA’s head office at Biaka Street-Bonduma, Buea, South West Region Cameroon on or before the deadline.
