World News, Afghanistan: Taliban has taken over the control of Kabul as Afghan President Ashraf Ghani  flees out of the country

Following the withdrawal of The United States troops from Afghanistan after 20 years of war, The Taliban and allied militant groups who have been fighting against the US backed government have on 15 August 2021 (West African time) taken over the control of the capital city, Kabul after conquering the majority cities in the country.

Reports also indicates that they Taliban fighters have seized the presidential palace according to BBC News. It is also reported that the Taliban Leaders had earlier assured the population that they will refrain from violence and allow safe passage for anyone wanting to leave the country.

Closed to 300 Afghanistan citizens in the United States have also protested against the withdrawal of US troops and the Afghan government for failing to protect the government. most of the protesters were women as there are fears that women may not go to school under the Taliban leadership.

According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres,  “Conflict is forcing hundreds of thousands to flee their homes. There continue to be reports of serious human rights abuses and violations in the communities most affected by the fighting. The Secretary-General is particularly concerned about the future of women and girls, whose hard-won rights must be protected. All abuses must stop. He calls on the Taliban and all other parties to ensure that international humanitarian law and the rights and freedoms of all people are respected and protected.”  

He also expresses the need for assistance while calling on all parties to ensure that humanitarian actors have unimpeded access to deliver timely and life-saving services and assistance. 

As reported by Al Jazeera, the Taliban say that they have reached what they were looking for.  “We have reached what we were seeking, the freedom of our country and the independence of our people,”.

The spokesman said the Taliban did not think foreign forces would “repeat their failed experience in Afghanistan again”.
