Mali Protest: Thousands protested against ECOWAS sanctions
2 min readFollowing the heavy sanctions meted against Mali by the regional bloc ECOWAS over the delayed elections, thousands of civilians protested against the decisions on 14 January 2022. According to ALgerzeera, news, the protest was called by the ruling military leaders.
At Independence Square in Bamako, thousands of civilians were carrying messages such as “Down with ECOWAS” and “Down with France”, while expressing patriotism for the country.
it is worthy to note that the leaders from the 15-member ECOWAS bloc earlier agreed to sanction Mali by imposing a trade embargo, including the freezing of their assets at the Central Bank of West African States, and shutting its members’ land and air borders with the country. the act was to punish the Mali military leaders for pushing the elections from February which was earlier agreed to December 2025. The United States, European Union and France are in support of the station.
As quoted by Al Jazeera English, Nouhoum Sarr, a member of Mali’s transitional legislature, said “our country will be saved and liberated by the Malian army and the entire Malian people”.
