SUICIDE IS NOT AN OPTION!
Yali RLC West Africa alumni Isabel Akum through her organisation Education Without Barriers, Cameroon has officially launched the “Suicide is Not an Option” campaign.
According to her, this campaign is timely and pertinent following the recent trends of events where unsuccessful GCE Exam candidates turn to take lives and the fact that the release of results for the 2022 session of the Exam is around the corner. She says it is imperative that they start creating awareness about this phenomenon as early as now. The campaign has as objective to change the mindset of these students and deter them from nurturing suicidal thoughts and acting on them.
In this regard, they are calling on parents and guardians to make these students understand that failure is part of life. For them to be more accommodating and understanding towards these children in times like this, build their morals and self-esteem so that they are not influenced by external peer pressure.
Isabel stressed that low self-esteem, the fear of insults, rejection and isolation from family and friends are some of the reasons why these students choose to take their lives.
They are encouraging everyone to join this campaign for a wider reach so we all can create a Suicide free World.
