Fight against Corruption in Cameroon: Community Solutions Alumni Empowers Youths on the Promotion of Transparency, Accountability and Ethics in Public Institutions

Corruption is one of the vices deterring development and the promotion and protection of human rights in Cameroon and beyond. Mr Cleatine Asongwe while speaking to HRLRC, he described corruption as one of the main reasons for an increase in Human Rights Violations and insecurity in the world and Cameroon in particular.

Despite the existence of mechanisms put in place by the national and international community to combat corruption, it has continued to rise especially among youths. At the national level, anti-corruption mechanisms such as the National Anti-Corruption Commission (CONAC), the Supreme State Audit Office (CONSUPE) etc. and at the international level such as United Nations and African Union Conventions exists to assists in combating corruption.

With its adverse effects towards development and the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Cameroonian youths have been contributing in one way or the other in combating corruption especially through sensitization and education.

On 29 July 2022, under the theme “Promoting Transparency, Accountability and Ethics in Public Institutions in Cameroon”, two non-governmental organisation; Actions for Development and Empowerment (ADE) in partnership with Youth for a Better Cameroon (YOBCA) organised a capacity building workshop to build capacity of youth leaders in combating corruption within public institutions in Yaoundé

The flag bearer of the initiative, Mr. Cleatine Asongwe who doubles as the 2021 Community Solutions Alumni from Cameroon and highly experience youth leader within the domain of governance and human rights while talking to HRLRC reiterated that the training was to increase youth awareness on corruption issues, generate community responsibility and encourage actions on preventing corruption.

As one of Community Solutions Alumni of 2021, Mr. Cleatine Asongwe said that this project is part of the Community Action Plan (CAP) he is implementing in Cameroon and as such his own contributions in combating corruption through education and creation of awareness among youth leaders on issues relating corruption.

Anti-Corruption and transparency Personnel’s including Micheal Tchenga, Cleantine Asongwe and Gerald Afandani were all instructors during this event  and promoters of the concept which is highly needed in Cameroon and beyond.

During the training, causes of corruption were identified such as unemployment, greed, bad governance among other causes. While highlighting goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals which encourages peace, justice and strong institutions, youth leaders were urged to be whistle blowers for anti-corruption in Cameroon and also to educate other youths on the concept of anti corruption in their various communities.
