Russia Formally Annex 15% of Ukraine (Four Regions of Ukraine)
2 min readAccording to BBC News, Russian-backed officials had earlier claimed the five-day exercise secured almost total popular support. So-called votes were held in Luhansk and Donetsk in the east, and in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson in the south.
Today the 30 September 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin formally announced that four regions of Ukraine that is in Russian-held Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions are now part of Russian territory.
According to Euronews, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed treaties on Friday to illegally annex more occupied Ukrainian territory in a sharp escalation of his seven-month invasion. Putin reiterated that the four Ukrainian regions are now “Russian forever”, Euronews stated. While addressing the the state officials, Putin said he is determine to protect the newly annexed areas of Ukraine by “all available means,” a nuclear-backed threat at a Kremlin signing ceremony where he also railed furiously at the West, accusing them of seeking Russia’s destruction.
Following the declaration which took place today, the Western countries including the USA and Europe have condemned the annexation and termed it a sham and illegal. The US have also imposed more sanctions against Russia.
According to Reuters, Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskiy said his country had submitted a fast track application to join the NATO military alliance and that he would not hold peace talks with Russia while Putin was still president.
