Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon: CHRDA report an increase in Human Rights Violations in the Northwest and Southwest Regions for the Month of November 2022

On 7 December 2022, the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa released a human rights report detailing human rights violations in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon in the month of November. The report indicate that there was an increase in Human Rights Violations.

In the month of November, the human rights situation in Cameroon, especially in the Northwest and Southwest Regions, continued to deteriorate. Attacks by both the defense and security forces (DSF) and non-state armed groups (NSAGs) on civilians and civilian property rose. There were several instances of targeted killings from the warring factions.

The educational sector was one of the hardest hit by human rights violations this month. Several school buildings were razed by arsonists while some students were targeted. On November 11, 2022, it was reported that a 16-year-old female student was abducted by gunmen at Bamenyen, a village in Galim Subdivision in the French-speaking West Region. The student was set free five days later, on November 16. The administrative block of Government Bilingual High School (GBHS) Eyumojock was also razed by unidentified armed men on November 18, 2022. There were also reports of torture perpetrated by elements of the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) against some students in GBHS Nkwen during a standoff between the two on November 17, 2022.

The increasing death rate in some prisons in Cameroon was also another disturbing issue in the month of November. There were reports of deaths in the Douala, Buea and Bamenda Central Prisons, associated with poor health due to resulting from malnutrition, overcrowding, and little or no medical attention.

There were also reports of arbitrary arrest and detention as well as extrajudicial killings perpetrated by Cameroon’s DSF, while separatist fighters carried out targeted killings on both DSF and civilians.
