Cameroon: CHRDA host two Ambassadors from the United Kingdom and Germany in less than a month

In what can be described as results of consistency and hard work, the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA), founded by Barrister Agbor Nkongho has received two diplomatic missions from the United Kingdom and Germany in less than one month. CHRDA stands out as a forefront human rights organization in Cameroon and the organization has been known for monitoring, documentating and reporting human rights violations and abuses especially in the conflict affected regions of Cameroon.

On 8 December 2023, the UK High Commissioner to Cameroon, H.E Barry Lowen, visited and had discussions with the staff of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa in Buea, the South West Region. He was accompanied by Alice Priest land, second secretary for climate and Chungong Asongwe, political and programs officer.

Among the issues discussed as stated on CHRDA’s official Facebook page, were issues that centred on climate-related events and the High Commissioner’s desire to meet CHRDA staff, mainly to discuss their operations on the ground and to hear success stories regarding the Human Rights Defenders project, funded by UK. Discussions were further held on finding alternative and feasible platforms for advocacy and youth engagement, with the use of technology and digital platforms, given the upcoming 2025 presidential elections in Cameroon. According to CHRDA, this was an opportunity to strengthen its partnership and cooperation with the UK in Cameroon, today and in the future.

Equally on 16 December 2023, the German Ambassador Dr Corinna Fricke and her team, made up of Stefan Rossellini, director of cultural politics, Serjoscha Beying, political advisor and Malte Locknitz, desk officer, visited the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa in Buea, the South West Region. The discussions were centred on CHRDA’s operations in the areas of human rights, peace, gender and empowerment, followed by a rundown of some German-supported projects implemented by CHRDA in the past. Emphasis was laid on how to find a peaceful solution to the ongoing armed conflict in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon.

The above visits are very important within the Civil Society Space as its build strong partnerships between the citizens and diplomatic missions. according to CHRDA on their official Facebook Page, “This visit marks a significant milestone in our relationship with German institutions in Cameroon and our commitment, to find everlasting solutions to the ongoing conflicts in Cameroon.”

It is worth noting that, the visit of the German Ambassador and the UK High Commissioner to CHRDA is not the first diplomatic visits as the organization in several occasion has welcomed diplomatic missions in their head office in Buea.
