In a significant milestone for Africa’s representation in global governance, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Liberia have been successfully elected as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026–2027 term. Their election, alongside Somalia, marks a crucial moment for the African continent in shaping international peace and security policies.
The African Union Commission Chairperson, His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, congratulated the newly elected members, emphasizing that their presence in the UNSC reflects a growing recognition of Africa’s leadership in global affairs. He highlighted that as part of the “A3” group within the Security Council, Congo, Liberia, and Somalia have a unique opportunity to advance African interests, advocate for peace solutions tailored to the continent’s realities, and reinforce multilateral cooperation.
This election comes at a critical time when conflicts, security challenges, and geopolitical shifts demand Africa’s proactive engagement in shaping international responses. The African Group’s representation ensures that Africa’s perspective on security, development, and peacebuilding remains influential at the highest level of global decision-making.
Furthermore, the African Union Commission has reaffirmed its support for the newly elected representatives and expressed gratitude to the outgoing A3 members, recognizing their contributions in advocating for Africa’s priorities on the global stage.
As these nations take up their collective mandate, their role in defending human rights, promoting stability, and reinforcing Pan-African solidarity will be instrumental in driving Africa’s global agenda. The Human Rights and Legal Research Centre joins the African Union in celebrating this achievement, anticipating that the new A3 representatives will use their influence to foster international cooperation and bring lasting solutions to pressing security challenges facing Africa and beyond.
