Raising Awareness to Prevent Drug Abuse in Cameroon: A Call for Collective Responsibility by CHRDA and other Civil Society Organizations
Drug abuse remains a growing public health crisis, affecting individuals, families, and communities worldwide. In Cameroon, the rise in substance abuse, particularly among young people, has prompted urgent action from civil society organizations like the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA). Recently, on 26 June 2025, CHRDA joined other NGOs in a street walk campaign to raise awareness on the dangers of drug abuse and advocate for preventive measures.
Why Awareness Matters
- It protects youths vulnerable to drug experimentation due to peer pressure, curiosity, or socio-economic hardships. Awareness campaigns educate them on the risks, empowering them to make informed choices.
- Breaks stigma among many struggling with addiction face discrimination, preventing them from seeking help. Public sensitization fosters compassion and encourages support rather than judgment.
- It promotes healthier communities, this is because drug abuse leads to mental health disorders, crime, and broken families. Prevention reduces these societal burdens, fostering safer and more productive communities.
- it advocates for policy change as stronger enforcement against drug trafficking and better rehabilitation programs are needed. Public awareness creates pressure on policymakers to take action
Preventing drug abuse requires a united effort between government, civil society, schools, parents, and individuals must work together. CHRDA remains committed to education, advocacy, and community engagement to combat this menace.
