African Union Mourns Fallen Peacekeepers After Tragic Helicopter Crash in Somalia

On 2 July 2025, the African Union Commission Chairperson, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed deep sorrow following the tragic crash of an African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) helicopter in Mogadishu earlier today 2 July 2025. The incident claimed the lives of five Ugandan peacekeepers, with several others injured, including civilians.

In an official statement, the Chairperson extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen heroes, the Government of Uganda, and the entire AUSSOM contingent. He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured, reaffirming the AU’s unwavering commitment to Somalia’s peace and stability.

“Their sacrifice will not be in vain, declared Mr. Youssouf, emphasizing that the bravery of these peacekeepers strengthens the resolve to achieve lasting security in Somalia. The AU continues to investigate the cause of the crash while honoring the courage of those who serve under its banner.
