Presidential Elections in Cameroon: President Paul Biya Declares Candidacy for the 2025 Presidential Election
On 12 October 2025, Cameroon stands at another pivotal moment in its democratic journey. His Excellency President Paul Biya has officially announced his candidacy, reaffirming his commitment to the well-being, unity, and security of the Cameroonian people.
His announcement has been welcomed with mixed feelings from supporters and opposition members. Key civil society actors like Barrister Agbor Balla have challenged Cameroonians to vote president Biya out in the upcoming elections in October.
With decades of leadership behind him, President Biya emphasized the tangible progress achieved under his stewardship—visible advancements in infrastructure, governance, and social cohesion. His declaration reflects a resolve rooted in both responsibility and vision: “Ensuring the security and well-being of the sons and daughters of our beloved and beautiful country is the sacred duty to which I have devoted my time and energy.”
Though he traces success in the area of security, unity and well being of Cameroonians, the Anglophone conflict is ongoing and the Boko Haram insurgency is equally ongoing in the Far North Region of Cameroon, thereby putting a question mark to the successes recorded and if the earmark successes will be achieved
Acknowledging ongoing global uncertainties and national challenges, he expressed readiness to tackle them head-on. Answering what he described as “numerous and insistent calls from the ten regions and the diaspora,” Biya is stepping forward once again with a promise to prioritize the empowerment of youth and women.
“Together, there are no challenges we cannot meet. The best is still to come.”
As the country prepares for the upcoming election, this declaration ignites conversations about continuity, progress, and the shared responsibility of shaping Cameroon’s future.
