2025 Presidential Elections in Cameroon: Akere Muna Files Petition Challenging Paul Biya’s Eligibility for 2025 Presidential Election
In a bold move that has stirred national attention, presidential candidate and legal luminary Barrister Akere Muna has officially petitioned the Constitutional Council to declare Mr. Paul Biya who double as the incumbent President, ineligible to contest in the upcoming October 12, 2025, presidential elections in Cameroon.
The petition is grounded in Article 118 of the Electoral Code, as established by Law No. 2012/001 of April 19, 2012, and subsequently amended by Law No. 2012/017 of December 21, 2012. According to Article 118(1), All persons who, by their own doing, have placed themselves in a situation of dependence on or connivance with a foreign person, organization or power or foreign State shall not be eligible. 118(2) further states that, Ineligibility shall be established by the Constitutional Council within 3 (three) days of referral to it, at the behest of any concerned person or the Legal Department. These legal provisions outline the conditions under which a candidate may be deemed ineligible to run for the highest office in the land.
Akere Muna’s challenge raises critical questions about constitutional compliance, democratic integrity, and the future of leadership in Cameroon. While the full details of the petition remain under review, the move signals a growing demand for transparency and accountability in the electoral process. As the nation prepares for the 2025 elections, this petition could mark a turning point in Cameroon’s political landscape, one that tests the strength of its institutions and the resolve of its citizens to uphold the rule of law. Stay tuned for updates as the Constitutional Council deliberates on this historic petition.
