Cameroon: President Paul Biya Sets Date for Regional Councillor Elections: What You Need to Know
In a significant move toward strengthening local governance, the President of the Republic of Cameroon has officially signed Decree No. 2025/412 of 01 September 2025, convening electoral colleges for the upcoming Regional Councillor elections. Election Day Confirmed: 30 November 2025
Signed on Monday September 1, 2025, activist like Rebecca Enonchong, have criticised the process, as the municipal elections were supposed to held before calling or convening the electorate for the election of Regional Councilors on November 30, 2025. Regional Councillors are elected by councillors and unfortunately, the councillors who are expected to vote on 30th November will be our their offices in 2026 during the municipal elections.
According to the decree, electoral colleges will gather in the chief towns and of each division across Cameroon on Sunday, 30 November 2025. This marks a key moment in the country’s democratic calendar, as Regional Councillors play a vital role in shaping regional development and representing local interests.
Cameroonians involved in the electoral process should take note of the official voting schedule:- Start Time: 8:00 a.m.- End Time: 6:00 p.m.These hours are set to ensure a smooth and accessible voting experience for all eligible participants.
The decree draws its authority from:- The Constitution of Cameroon and Law No. 2012/001 of 19 April 2012 relating to the Electoral Code, along with its amendments. This legal framework ensures the legitimacy and transparency of the electoral process.
To guarantee public awareness and compliance, the decree will be Registered- Published urgently- Inserted in the Official Gazette in both English and French. This bilingual publication ensures that citizens across linguistic lines are informed and prepared.
