The Meaning of Human Rights Protection: Bishop Michael Bibi Secures Freedom for 29 Prisoners in Buea Central Prison
On January 13, 2026, Bishop Michael Bibi, Chief Shepherd of the Diocese of Buea, led a remarkable initiative that brought hope and joy to dozens of families. Through the Diocese’s Justice and Peace Commission, in collaboration with Prison Superintendent Mr. Ndingue Mikindo, Bishop Bibi secured the release of 29 prisoners (27 men and 2 women) from Buea Central Prison.
These individuals had completed their sentences but remained behind bars due to unpaid fines. In a gesture of compassion, Bishop Bibi personally covered the costs, ensuring their freedom.
Addressing the newly freed men and women, Bishop Bibi delivered a soul-stirring message: “Be living proof of the transformative intent of the prisons. Turn your lives around, shun crime, and embrace the laws of the state.” His words challenged the ex-prisoners to rebuild their lives with dignity and responsibility, serving as examples of rehabilitation and renewal.
The Diocese’s Justice and Peace Commission has pledged to provide follow-up support, helping the former inmates reintegrate into society. This includes guidance, counseling, and community-based assistance to ensure they do not return to crime but instead contribute positively to their families and communities.
The released prisoners expressed overwhelming gratitude to Bishop Bibi for his kindness and generosity as they sang joyfully while thanking the Bishop and the entire Buea Diocese. Their joy was visible as they reunited with loved ones, thankful for the second chance at life. Families celebrated the Bishop’s selfless act, which not only restored freedom but also rekindled hope.
This initiative underscores the Diocese of Buea’s commitment to justice, peace, and rehabilitation. Bishop Bibi’s leadership demonstrates how faith-based institutions can play a transformative role in society, bridging compassion with justice. By securing freedom for these 29 individuals, Bishop Bibi has reminded the community that mercy, forgiveness, and support are essential pillars of true justice.
