Original Aspects of African Human Rights Instruments and Jurisprudence to be discussed during NANHRI’s 15th Biennial Conference in Yaoundé: Advancing African Human Rights Instruments and Jurisprudence
In a Communque publish on the official Facebook Page of the Cameroon Human Rights Commission, the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) will convene its 15th Biennial Conference in Yaoundé, Cameroon, hosted at the Economic and Social Council premises. the training will take place between the 5th and 6th of Febrary 2026 is Organized in collaboration with the Cameroon Human Rights Commission (CHRC), this high‑level gathering will unite government representatives, African human rights leaders, members of the 46 National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), as well as partners from GANHRI, OHCHR, the diplomatic corps, civil society, academia, and traditional authorities.
Under the theme, Original Aspects of African Human Rights Instruments and Jurisprudence, the 2026 Biennial Conference will explore the theme: “Leveraging African Human Rights Instruments and Jurisprudence for Strengthened Implementation of Human Rights: The Strategic Role of African National Human Rights Institutions.”
This theme highlights Africa’s distinctive contributions to global human rights discourse, including:
- Collective rights and communal responsibilities
- Enforceable socio‑economic and cultural rights
- Culturally grounded approaches to justice
Focus Areas
Participants will reflect on how African instruments such as:
- The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights
- The Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol)
- The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child
- The AU Convention on Internally Displaced Persons
…alongside jurisprudence from African human rights mechanisms, can be leveraged to strengthen national and regional implementation.
