Cameroon: US Embassy Yaoundé has requested for an impartial investigations into communal conflict between Fulani herdsmen and natives of Nwa.

On 3 March 2021, the United States Embassy Yaoundé in a press release has raised concerns over the ongoing going communal conflict between the Fulani herdsmen and natives of Nwa subdivision, the North West Region. “The United States is deeply concerned about recent reports of communal violence in the Nwa Subdivision of the North West region. We urge calm and call for an immediate cessation of violence, which as reportedly led to several deaths and the looting and burning of houses, markets, and churches in at least five villages.”

The ongoing violence in at least five villages have seen bloodshed amidst the ongoing Anglophone armed conflict and the spread of COVID-19. As a result, properties have been destroyed, houses and markets burnt while many people have fled to the bushes for safety.

The Cameroonian government authorities have not made an official statement in that regard though with the severity of violence, which may generate into bigger conflict if it is NOT address properly. The traditional rulers of the area at the time of this report has planned an emergency meeting in Bankim to discuss the issue.

The situation has created another humanitarian crisis in the area, the United States mentioned in their press released “We call on the authorities to take all possible steps to ensrue securitu for residents of Nwa, significant number of whom have reportedly been displaced and are now in need of humanitarian assistance.”

The US embay regretted the ongoing atrocities in the area and call for an impartial investigations to hold perpetrators accountable and rendered justice to victims. “We offer our condolences to all those affecte by this violence and urge authorities to conduct a full and impartial investigation and to hold perpetrators accountable. It is essential that steps be taken to ease tensions and promote tolerance and mutual understanding within the affected communities.”
