Her Innovation Cameroon (HIC) donates school materials to pupils in Buea-Cameroon

The global health crisis, COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing armed conflict in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon have increasingly deterred children from going to school. School boycott has continued to be one of the separatist’s war strategies since 2016 when the Anglophone crisis started in Cameroon.

Education being the mainstay to development in every community, it is essential for every child to be educated. The rising rate of illiteracy in the two regions of Cameroon is a call for concern according to the president of Her Innovation Cameroon (HIC), Ms Futih Laura.

STEM education is one of the main objectives of Her Innovation Cameroon. HIC has been contributing towards empowering especially girls’ education in Cameroon as many children have not been going to school because of the ongoing armed conflict, which has led to socio-economic insecurities.

On 15 October 2021, HIC with support from the LESA Supreme Batch of 96/01 had a humanitarian response visit to some schools in Buea, the South West Region. During the visit under the theme “Humanitarian Response to the Anglophone Crisis: Encouraging School Resumption”, the HIC team made donations ranging from school bags, didactic learning materials, exercise books and financial support including tuition fees to the selected pupils.

The outreach took place at the Government Nursery and Primary School Bova-Buea in the South West Region of Cameroon. Ms Futih Laura while talking to the pupils, encourages them to keep studying in order to become future entrepreneurs, leaders,

Ms Eyabi Gwamesia Sheila, one of the HIC team leaders briefed the pupils why they choose to visit their school and one of the reasons was to encourage effective school resumption. The HIC team also challenged some school children to read what was written on the HIC banner and the winner was rewarded with a school bag and other materials.

In other to create awareness and fight against misinformation in times of COVID-19, which is becoming more dangerous, the HIC team also talked about the importance of vaccination and debunked fake news going around social on the negative creation of COVID-19 vaccines. Some extra school materials were also given to the administration to be given to other vulnerable pupils.

The school management expressed gratitude and wishes well for the HIC team while the beneficiaries thanked the team for their support
