Doctors Without Borders suspends services in the South West Region of Cameroon.

The Management of Doctors Without Borders in Cameroon in a communique announced on 29 March 2022 that they are suspending their services in the South West Region where armed conflict has been going on for five years.
In a communique address to community leaders of the South Region, DWB says they are officially and indefinitely suspending its services in the region. They cited the difficult relationship with the government of Cameroon“The ability of Doctors Without Borders to conduct its activities in the region has been severely
hampered by a difficult relationship with the government amidst false accusation of complicity to secessionists.”
According to the communique, the difficult relationship with the government has continued to make it impossible for the DWB to continue providing support while maintaining the standards the organisation is committed to ensuring for its patients
Despite their continued efforts and unwavering commitment to improve access to health services in vulnerable communities, DWB says the current situation has makes it impossible for them to continue providing this support, while maintaining the standards the organisation is committed to ensure for its patients.
As of 29 March 2022. Doctors Without Borders suspended all its activities in all facilities and communities within the South West Region of Cameroon. DWB stated that they will keep on supporting the patients currently admitted under their care for as long as possible a defined in the Letter of Agreement (LoA) signed by MSF and the facilities, but that they will no longer be providing ambulance services, support to medical care in the communities and/or support to any of the private or Ministry of Health medical structures as of 29 March 2022. They reiterated their commitment to the communities served by our projects Kumba and Mamfe, as well as our disposition to review this difficult decision if the sta
challenges are resolved.
According to Barrister Agbor Nkongho, DWB have been providing enormous support to health facilities and communities of the region. We benefited from their services when one of our colleagues was shot in Buea. One beneficiary had this to say: “I can testify of the immense importance and help DWB has given my family. My mother-in-law’s finger was amputated and the entire bill of 575.000frs paid by DWB in Mutengene Baptist Hospital.”I hope and pray that the issues between DWB and the state are resolved so that this indefinite suspension is uplifted.
