Human Rights body condemns the horrific attack and killing of about 9 civilians by suspected armed separatists in the West Region of Cameroon

The Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa(CHRDA), a nongovernmental Human Rights NGO has condemned in strong terms the gruesome and killing of about 9 civilians and destruction civilians properties in the Western Region of Cameroon . The attack which led to the gruesome killing of about nine civilians and the burning/looting of civilian properties in Bamenyam, a village in Galim Sub-division, Bamboutos Division of the West region of Cameroon is unacceptable and inhumane. This incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday November 21 at about 7 AM local time. Eyewitnesses recounted that about 40 gunmen onboard motorcycles stormed a market and opened fire sporadically killing about nine civilians and injuring several others. It is reported that some elements of the Cameroon DSF sustained injuries while counteracting the attack. The gunmen burnt down some shops and reportedly abducted some civilians to an unknown destination.

As at the time of this statement, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. It should be recalled that, this attack comes barely two weeks after over 25 civilians were killed in Egbekaw neighborhood in the town of Mamfe, Manyu Division of the South West region of Cameroon, by armed separatists.

In the meantime, the Centre is carrying out investigation to uncover facts about the incident. CHRDA extends its sincere condolences to the families of the victims affected by this unfortunate and tragic incident and to the Bamenyam community in general.

CHRDA condemns in strong terms the barbaric execution of unarmed civilians. This gruesome act is against the international human rights and humanitarian law. The Center urges the Cameroon government and competent authorities in the area, to carry out immediate, proper and independent investigation to uncover the identity of these individuals and bring them to justice.
