In a statement published on the 30th of January 2024, the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA), a forefront Human Rights organization in Cameroon has vehemently condemns the barbaric and inhuman attack and killing of at least one civilian by armed separatists in Buea, the South West Region of Cameroon. According to the organization, on 29 January 2024, armed separatists stormed the town of Buea and started shooting randomly . As reported by CHRDA, the attack took place at about 9: 00 PM in the Molyko neighbourhood in Buea and claimed the life of one person, whom CHRDA got his name as Musonge Derrick. The attack also resulted in the burning of at least four cars around the Buea Central Market area.
In an official statement from the organization, CHRDA noted that in the video that was widely circulated online, “Ambazonia Fighters” loyal to “General Sagat” of the Fako Mountain Lions at the scene of the attack promised to burn the properties of those violating ghost towns.
While noting that since the beginning of this year, several attacks have been perpetrated against the civilian population by both the state and non-state armed groups in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon. The organization equally noted that, several factions of separatist movements, “Ambazonia” have recently called for ghost towns between the 8 and 12 February 2024 in the entire North West and South West Regions of Cameroon as a way to frustrate the commemoration of the National Youth Day which is often celebrated on 11 February. Equally, the separatist movements have recently promised hell to people violating the Monday ghost towns instituted by the separatists since the beginning of this conflict.
In the conclusion of the statement from CHRDA, they regretted the fact that the violation of the right to life was in violation of the international human rights and humanitarian law. The Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa condemned the barbaric attacks and urged the separatist leaders to caution their fighters to cease attacking civilians and civilian properties and to respect human rights and humanitarian law standards. They equally urged the Cameroon government to launch an impartial investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
