Bright Light Projects Launches School Campaign to Combat Plastic Pollution in Cameroon and Sierra Leone, 2023
2 min readPlastics pollution is a reality and it has been causing catastrophic effects both on land and water. These effects are harmful to humans, and equally damaging the ecosystems which are vital to our livelihoods. According to the United Nations Environment Program, Every year 19-23 million tonnes of plastic waste leaks into aquatic ecosystems, polluting lakes, rivers and seas.
To contribute towards achieving the united nations sustainable development goals, most especially goal 13, Bright Lights Projects has launched a school campaign project to tackle plastic pollution in Cameroon and Sierra Leone. The project entitled, “Environmental Sustainability for Primary and Secondary Schools” campaign targets Bamenda and Makeni, cities struggling with severe plastic waste issues due to inadequate waste management and limited recycling options. The sole purpose of this initiative is to educate Students and Establish Sustainable Recycling Systems in Bamenda, the North West Region of Cameroon and Makeni, Siera Leon.
The campaign is part of BLP’s larger initiative, “Promoting Sustainable Waste Management and Economic Opportunities through Plastic Recycling.” It focuses on three key dimensions of sustainable development: environmental protection, economic growth, and social protection.
To achieve the objectives of this project, Bright Light Projects highlighted some key activities including but not limited to awareness assemblies, poster competitions, and establishing sustainable recycling systems. The campaign equally aims to create economic opportunities for youth through entrepreneurship in waste management and raise awareness about environmental protection.
With Africa’s population is projected to reach 2.4 billion by 2050, educating schoolchildren on proper waste disposal is crucial for a sustainable future. This year’s theme, “Solutions to Plastic Pollution,” aligns with the campaign’s goals, emphasizing the urgent need to tackle plastic waste and its detrimental effects on communities and the environment.
