The U.S. Embassy in Cameroon condemns the attack against school resumption in the Northwest and Southwest Regions

The Embassy of the United States in Cameroon in their recent human rights statement have condemned all forms of violence against the civilian population in the North west and South West Regions of Cameroon.
While highlighting that there have been several incidents of threat against civilians recently recorded in the conflict regions of the Northwest and Southwest, the Embassy expressed regret to the horrific situation. This call is coming after the separatist leaders have in their various factions calls for ghost towns to hinder smooth school resumption in the two regions. The Ambazonia Governing Council of Dr Ayaba Cho and the Interim Government of Mr Sako Ikome and other factions of the Separatist movement have all call for two weeks lockdown to frustrate school resumption and have equally given their own date for school resumption and their specifications.
While noting that the schools are resuming very soon, the Embassy reminded the public and specifically the separatist leaders who have given their own date for school resumption that education is a human rights. They stated in their statement that every child has a right to education and that schools are sanctuaries for for learning, and children must not be prevent from attending classes.
At the end of the statement, the United States Embassy in Cameroon calls for a need for peaceful approach to address the complex political and security situation in the Northwest and Southwest Regions. This call affirms continuous calls by the national and international community on the need for inclusive dialogue between the separatist leaders and the Cameroon government authorities. The U.S. Embassy condemns all forms of violence against civilians, and we are deeply concerned by recent incidents and threats in Cameroon’s Northwest and Southwest regions, as we have been throughout the crisis. Moreover, as classes resume in the coming days, we cannot forget that every child has a right to an education. Schools are sanctuaries for learning, and children must not be prevented from attending classes. We reaffirm the need for peaceful approaches to address complex political and security issues.
