International Day of the Girl Child: UNIMAC and Partners educate students on Menstrual Hygiene Management in Bamenda-Cameroon

In Commemoration of the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child under the theme ‘Girls’ vision for the future‘, UNIMAC, a nongovernmental and not for profit making organisation in partnership with SIWOG and Stresors Cameroon, carried out community outreach in Baptist High School Nkwen, Bamenda, the Northwest Region of Cameroon. UNIMAC partnered with other organizations to build the capacity of these young girls on issues relating to laws protecting women’s rights and menstrual hygiene management.
In the area of the promotion of the Rights of Girls within the Framework of the Law, facilitators with expert knowledge of the legal rights of girls equipped them with the knowledge they need to stand up against exploitation, violence, and human trafficking. More emphasis was laid on their right to education, protection, and the freedom to pursue their dreams without fear of discrimination or abuse.
Also, in the area of Menstrual Hygiene Management, UNIMAC and partners held an interactive session on menstrual hygiene management which is an essential aspect of girl’s health and well-being. These sessions were so interactive as students were asking for inquiries on issues relating to the usage and disposal of sanitary pads.
During the event, sanitary pads were shared to students and this went along to reinforce the importance of self-care and breaking the silence and stigma around menstruation.
According to the AMEH MAURICE NGWA, Chief Executive Officer of UNIMAC, “This event is closely aligned with UNIMAC’s mission to protect young maidens and domestic workers from exploitation, violence, and trafficking”. By empowering these girls with the knowledge of their rights and promoting healthy practices, the Chief Executive Officer believes that they are actively contributing to the creation of safer, more equitable communities.
