The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Welcomes the Signing of the Peace Agreement Between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda

In a pivotal moment for peace and regional cooperation, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda have signed a historic peace agreement on 27 June 2025, signaling a bold commitment to reconciliation and dialogue. This landmark accord has been warmly welcomed by H.E. Mr. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, who hailed it as a crucial step toward ending cycles of conflict in the Great Lakes region.

The agreement reflects the visionary leadership of President Félix Tshisekedi of the DRC and President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, both of whom chose the path of diplomacy and regional solidarity over discord. Their determination to foster mutual understanding stands as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of political will.

Equally commendable is the role of President João Lourenço of Angola, whose mediation underpinned the success of the negotiations. The unwavering support from regional bodies, including the East African Community (EAC), the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), also illustrates the strength of collective regional frameworks in sustaining peace processes.

The global community played its part as well. Qatar’s behind-the-scenes diplomacy and steadfast encouragement of dialogue created the conditions necessary for trust-building between the parties. The United States also contributed significantly, reinforcing the importance of global solidarity in advancing African peace and stability.

The African Union has reiterated its full backing for the implementation of the agreement and reaffirmed its readiness to support post-conflict recovery and reconciliation efforts. As the continent moves closer to the vision of “Silencing the Guns in Africa by 2030,” this peace agreement serves not only as a beacon of hope but also as a reminder that African-led solutions remain the cornerstone of lasting transformation.

Durable peace is not a destination, it’s a collective journey. And in this moment, the path forward shines a little brighter. Read the official statement here
