High-Alert: Cameroon Bar Association Demands Urgent Justice Amid Alarming Resurgence of Child Abuse and Rape Cases

A deeply disturbing wave of child abuse, sexual assault, and murder has triggered an institutional crisis in Cameroon. In an urgent official communiqué released on May 29, 2026, the Cameroon Bar Association (Barreau du Cameroun) sounded a national alarm over the “disturbed resurgence of sexual offenses” targeting minors across major cities including Yaoundé, Douala, Bangangté, and the North-West Region.

Led by Bar President Mbah Eric Mbah, Esq., the legal body has fiercely condemned these heinous acts, exposed systemic lapses in the judicial system, and launched a dedicated emergency legal unit to prosecute predators and protect victims’ families.

A Timeline of Horror: The Cases Shocking Cameroon

The communiqué outlines a series of horrific incidents across the national territory, revealing that spaces once considered safe havens, particularly schools, have been compromised by sexual predators. the Bar Association highlighted the following cases in their statement

  • Yaoundé (Meyo Neighborhood): A teacher identified as Materne Rameaux ABOMO NGONO allegedly abused approximately fifteen children between the ages of 4 and 14 by exploiting his position of authority.
  • Yaoundé (Odza Neighborhood): The rape of a 3-year-old schoolgirl sparked intense public demonstrations on May 28, 2026, around her school campus.
  • Douala (PK14) & Bangangté: On the exact same day, a 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her teacher in Douala. Meanwhile, in Bangangté, an angry mob subjected an individual to vigilantism (mob justice) after he allegedly targeted and raped a 10-year-old girl from her school.
  • North-West Region (Momo Division): A 14-year-old girl was raped by a 70-year-old man. Shockingly, upon arrest, the suspect allegedly paid 30,000 CFA francs to the victim’s aunt in an attempt to corruptly evade justice.
  • The Tragic Case of Divine Mbarga Atangana: These incidents mirror the tragic fate of 11-year-old Divine Mbarga Atangana, who was found dead on March 19, 2026. She was presumably raped and murdered by her classmate’s father, who reportedly forced his own 11-year-old son to stand watch during the crime.

Breaking the Silence on “Amicable Settlements” and Judicial Leniency

In its strongly worded release, the Bar Association did not mince words regarding systemic failure, explicitly taking aim at two major roadblocks to justice:

1. Corrupt Out-of-Court Arrangements

The Bar Association has strictly condemned “amicable settlements”, under-the-table financial or social arrangements made between child predators and the victims’ families. The Bar President warned that any parents, judicial police officers (OPJ), or magistrates who participate in these “despicably scandalous arrangements” will be legally treated as accomplices to the crime.

2. Excessive Judicial Leniency

The Bar deplored the frequent, premature release of known sexual predators after short stints in police custody or pretrial detention. They called upon all actors within the Cameroonian criminal justice system to enforce severe sanctions without compromise.

Institutional Reforms: Background Checks and Media Ethics

To halt the infiltration of educational institutions by malicious actors, the Bar Association is demanding immediate structural changes:

  • Stricter Teacher Recruitment: The Ministry of Basic Education and the Ministry of Secondary Education must urgently strengthen background checks and moral character assessments, particularly within private schools.
  • Inter-Ministerial Synergy: An enhanced collaboration is requested between education ministries and the Ministry of Social Affairs to scale up child protection awareness campaigns.
  • Media Responsibility: Journalists, content creators, and social media influencers are urged to uphold the highest ethical standards. The Bar strongly advises against publishing photographs or identities of young victims to avoid inflicting lifelong secondary trauma.

Active Intervention: The Bar Launches a Special Task Force

Moving beyond rhetoric, the Cameroon Bar Association has officially constituted itself as a legal party on behalf of the victims. The Bâtonnier has established a Special Unit to provide free legal advice, assistance, and courtroom representation to affected families until judicial proceedings reach a definitive conclusion.

Executive Composition of the Special Unit:

  • President: Barrister Philippe Olivier MEMONG (Advocate in Yaoundé / Representative for Centre, South & East)
  • Rapporteur: Barrister Serges Martin ZANGUE (Advocate in Douala / Secretary of the Bar)
  • Members:
    • Barrister Gladys Fri MBUYAH née LUKU (Mutengene)
    • Barrister Charlotte TCHAKOUNTE (Douala)
    • Barrister Dorcas Mirette NKONGME (Yaoundé)
    • Barrister Jude MOKOM NJIE (Bamenda)
