2 min readThe United States Senators have voted to acquit the former president of the United States after a historic impeachment trial today 13 February 2021. The former president was accused by the senate amongst other issues, for the riot at Capitol, which led to loss of lives and massive destruction of property by Trump supporters.
It is the second time the former president is being accused and stand for impeachment trials. The historic part of it is that he is the first president of the United States to be impeached for two times and the first to be impeached after office. The majority senates voted to convict Donal Trump but did not succeed because they got only 57 votes against 43. The Senate was supposed to have at least 67 vote against Donald Trump to be able to convict him. That is, they needed at least two thirds majority required for the conviction
It is worthy to note that, at least seven (7) Senators from the Republican Party voted sided with those of the Democrats to convict the Former President. Former President Donald Trump said after the historic decision, “My deepest thanks as well to all of the United States Senators and Members of Congress who stood proudly for the constitution we all revere and for the sacred legal principles at the heart of our country”
If the impeachment trial went successful in favour of the Democrats, Donald Trump could have not been able to stand as a presidential candidate in 2024. As it stands now, Donald Trump is eligible to stand for the 2024 office.
