Human Rights Concern: The US Embassy in Cameroon has expressed with dissatisfaction the sentencing of two transgender women in Cameroon.

Since the two crossdressers, Loic Midrel popularly known as Shakiro and  Mouthe Roland known as Patricia were handed five years imprisonment, the decision has received condemnation from the LGBTQI+ community. Those, especially from the western world, have continued to criticize the decision owing to the fact that it is considered a violation of their rights.

On 11 May 2021, the judgement, which will go down in history was handed and it has been trending on the media especially in the Western World where they promote the rights of LGBT persons. The recent condemnation is from the United States Embassy in Cameroon.

The United States Embassy in Cameroon wrote on their Official Twitter Page on 14 May 2021 “We are concerned about the 5-year sentence for 2 transgender women and the increase in arrests of LGBTQI+ persons in Cameroon. It is essential that governments work to ensure all individuals can freely enjoy the human rights and fundamental freedoms to which they are entitled”
