Org. Setting and Reporting: The position is located in the Communications Campaigns Service, Strategic Communications Division in the Department of Global Communications and its worldwide network of information centers. The incumbent reports directly to the Chief of Service.
Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Senior Public Information Officer, Climate will be responsible for the following duties:

•Conceptualize, design and execute the overall public information strategy, programme and activities on climate action.

•Serve as lead spokesperson on climate action; provide technical and policy advice on highly complex climate communications issues; develop and disseminate best practices.

•Lead and direct a team of communication information officers; plan and allocate work assignments; coach, mentor, and evaluate staff; participate in recruitment and selection of new staff and in the development of training programs.Oversee the preparation, from research to publication, of written and visual content on climate science and solutions, for UN digital platforms, including web and social media, and manage the climate portal as the UN content hub; coordinate climate communications across DGC.

•Conduct sensitive political liaison work, including with the Secretary-General’s Climate Action Team and interagency partners; create and maintain networks of high level communications contacts with broadcast media, the press, governmental agencies, international institutions and other groups and organizations in civil society (non-governmental organizations (NGOs), businesses, community organizations, etc.); represent the organization in important meetings, conferences, events, etc.; promote joint public relations ventures.

•Coordinate climate communications across the UN Secretariat.

•Contribute to development of institutional communications policies.Measure and assess the overall effectiveness of the climate communications strategy and programmes and make needed changes in approach and technique.

•Provide communications advise and diverse materials (briefings, speeches, questions and answers) for use by senior officials, develop or overall see development of high profile multi-media communications campaigns, including the ActNow campaign on individual climate action; set quality and production standards for information dissemination.

Provides leadership and takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work; demonstrates knowledge of strategies and commitment to the goal of gender balance in staffing.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required.
Experience in leading strategic climate communications efforts in a UN context or similar international organization is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
