Anglophone armed conflict in Cameroon: Ambazonian Fighters have released Rev. Fr. Christopher Eboka of the Mamfe Diocese

2 min read

The Catholic Christians of the Mamfe Diocese in the Southwest Region of Cameroon are celebrating the release of Rev. Christopher Eboka, who was kidnapped by the separatist fighters on May 22 May 2021

The conditions under his release have not been made known to the public or there has not been any official statement from the authorities of the Mamfe Diocese

In videos circulating on social media, Fr. Eboka is seen thanking God for his safe release while Christians are celebrating his safe return

It is worthy to note that he was kidnapped while carrying out his church duties in the church parishes around the diocese.

While in captivity, the diocese of Mamfe and the Catholic community in Cameroon have been calling for his immediate release while organizing special prayers for him as was the case on Friday 28 May 2021 at Mamfe.

Though there is no clear specification on why he was kidnapped, notes circulating online purportedly written by the separatist fighters claim that the catholic church is playing a double standard within the crisis. “We’re cautioning the CATHOLIC CHURCH to stop working underground with LRC in bribing our FIGHTERS- RF’S to surrender themselves to LRC at the DDR CENTER in BUEA or to come to them ( The church ) & collect huge sums of moneys & run to NIGERIA an start up a business or to just runny away & abandoned the struggle , thereby killing our struggle gradually ..
The church has been noted for this & it has to stop please” as stated in the note

The armed separatists are claiming that the catholic church has been collaborating with the government to weaken the Ambazonian struggle by making their fighters to dropped arms by either giving them money to run to Nigeria or to go to disarmament centres

While saying that the Ambazonian struggle is not against the church, they also accused other religious bodies of complying with government authorities, as the attack against men of God has been recurrent in the two regions.
