UNEP Emissions Gap Report 2021: The Heat Is On, A World of Climate Promises Not Yet Delivered

2 min read

In the Emissions Gap Report 2021 published on 26 October 2021, The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has warned the world that enough has not been done to avoid the climate change catastrophe. The recent emissions gap report news circulating around the world have attracted a massive audience to be talking about its threats to humanity.

In her forward in the Emissions Gap Report 2021 “The Heat is On”, The Executive Director of UNEP, Inger Andersen says that “Climate change is no longer a future problem. It is a ‘now’ problem. As we saw this year, devastating impacts are spreading across the globe and growing ever stronger. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change told us a few months ago that we have a 50 per cent chance of exceeding a 1.5°C temperature threshold within the next few decades”

“One week before #COP26, we were still on track for a catastrophic global temperature rise of around 2.7 degrees Celsius. Scientists are clear on the facts. Leaders need to be just as clear in their plans to avoid climate catastrophe.” says UN Secretary-General António Guterres

Climate change is already affecting our communities especially with the rising temperatures of at least 2.7°C. This is a call for concern ahead of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference also known as the COP26 summit, which will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme;

  • Latest UNEP Emissions Gap Report finds new and updated Nationally Determined Contributions only take 7.5% off predicted 2030 emissions, while 55% is needed to meet the 1.5°C Paris goal
  • Latest climate promises for 2030 put the world on track for a temperature rise this century of at least 2.7°C
  • Net-zero commitments could shave off another 0.5°C, if these pledges were made robust and if 2030 promises were made consistent with the net-zero commitments

The report titled ‘The Heat Is On: A World of Climate Promises Not Yet Delivered’ is encouraging the world leaders who have pledged through the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change to fulfil their promises.
