Buea – 24 November 2021: The Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA) strongly condemns the attack in Government Bilingual High School (GBHS) Ekondo Titi, leading to the killing of at least three (03) Students and One (01) teacher, with Several Others Injured.

Today November 24, 2021, an attack occurred in a school in the Locality of Ekondo Titi, situated in the Ndian Division of the Southwest Region, allegedly perpetrated by unknown gunmen. In the attack, at least three (03) students and a French Language teacher were killed and an unknown number injured.

As at the time of this statement, the victims include among others: Emmanuel Orume 12 Years old, Joyceline Iken 16 years old, Kum Emmanuel 17 years and Mrs Song Celestina Fien, who is a French-language teacher in the School.

While we are still carrying out investigations for more details, it is worthy of note that this attack comes barely two weeks following the Killing of a school child in Bamenda on 12 November 2021, by a police officer. After the unfortunate incident in Bamenda, a faction of the separatist movement (The Interim Government of Ambazonia) announced a ban on all schools and educational institutions in the Anglophone regions via their communication Secretary Chris Anu. The Announcement also promised violence against teachers, students and school proprietors who would violate this order.

CHRDA stronger condemns this attack on school children and teachers, and calls on the Cameroonian government to:

  • Thoroughly, impartially and effectively investigate the incident and bring the culprits to justice.
  • Take all necessary measures to put an end to the Anglophone Crisis by a truthful and inclusive dialogue.
  • Provide reparation, rehabilitation and guarantees to the families of the victims.
