Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon: There was an Explosion in OIC Market in Great Soppo, Buea, South West Region
2 min readToday the 6th of December 2021, there was an explosion in Buea, the South West Region of Cameroon. The incident occurred in OIC Market wherein has been operating on Mondays considered being ghost town since the beginning of the Anglophone armed conflict in the North West and South West Region of Cameroon.
The use of Improvised Explosive Devices has been rampant especially against schools, taxis and those violating the Monday Ghost Towns. The Civil Society Organisations have also continued to name and shame the perpetrators.
The incident on 6 December 2021 is happening at a time the leaders of the Southern Cameroons recently called for collaboration and respect for human rights through the Toronto Southern Cameroon Leadership Retreat Declaration.
From pictures circulating online and from witnesses, there were two explosives in the market where one was discovered and taken by the Cameroon military while one exploded. The explosive that went off was allegedly given to a truck pusher inside a bag. Fortunately, there was no casualty or injury incurred.
It is worthy to note that the use of Improvised Explosive Devices has been recurrent in Buea including the explosion in two taxis, an attack in a school in Ekondo Titi and the in the University of Buea. This has continued to spark fears in the minds of the Buea inhabitants.
The Explosive devices is believed to have been deposited by the separatist fighters given that they have been against any activity on Mondays considered to be the traditional ghost town day and forbidden for someone to operate in Southern Cameroons
