Organization Context:

The Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA) is an independent and apolitical non-governmental organization in Africa. This Centre is a non-profit making organization created purposely for the promotion, protection and respect for human rights and democracy. We currently operate in Cameroon with offices in the South West and North West Regions. We have been active on issues relating to the promotion and protection of human rights and capacity building in areas of justice and peaceful coexistence.

PROJECT CONTEXT

As part of our efforts to increase the participation of women in conflict resolution and political representation, the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA) is implementing its two-year project on ‘Supporting Women Participation in Conflict Resolution. The National Endowment Fund for Democracy (NED) funded this project to build the capacity of community leaders and political leaders/aspirants especially youths and women to participate in conflict resolution efforts, support social cohesion within their communities, and promote citizen engagement in community decision-making. The project will run for two years that is from 2023 to 2025.

DUTIES

Within the duration of the assignment (project), the experts in Gender and politics, and conflict resolution will be expected to, in a series of training, build the capacity of participants/beneficiaries towards effective mainstreaming of gender equality and the inclusion of women in conflict resolution and political participation. Under the specific guidance and direct supervision of the project manager, the qualified experts will assume the following tasks on the themes below:

  • Train participants during a capacity-building workshop on gender issues related to political participation and conflict resolution efforts.
  • Train participants on non-violent communications and advocacy techniques.
  • Train participants on gender equality, the challenges for equal representation and opportunities for increasing women’s participation.
  • Train participants on conducting community needs assessments.
  • Consults experts with other experts on gender equality and the role of women in peace and security to develop two policy briefs and training resources for women’s organizations.
  • Supervised members of trainee group to conduct advocacy activities, and community dialogue, in ten targeted communities.
  • Participate in a roundtable meeting in both regions targeted by the project, with key stakeholders in government, civil society and religious institutions.
  • Mentor trainees to continue engagements with individuals, and local, national and international organizations focused on gender inclusion.
  • Coordinate the Host a final meeting with the trainees, to share experiences, discuss best practices and identified lessons learnt from the project.

Criteria

MINIMUM ORGANIZATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Education: The Experts should have a postgraduate university degree in Social Sciences (Law, Gender studies, Conflict Resolution or political science) and or other related fields.

Technical and Functional Experience:

  1. A minimum of 5 years of practical experience in the field of gender equality, conflict resolution or politics.  
  2. Thorough understanding of the context of the project, that is thematic and geographical (North West and South West Regions of Cameroon) context. An experience in similar or likeminded training is highly needed.
  3. Familiarity with gender analysis tools and methodologies in the specific area of intervention, mainstreaming of gender equality in conflict resolution and political inclusion and strong communication skills, and ability to liaise with various stakeholders, including government officials.
  4. Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is required and Pidgin English will be an additional benefit
