The EU-co-funded project ‘Promoting gender-transformative approaches to strengthen the resilience of Cameroon’s civil society, with a special focus on the North-West and South-West regions of Cameroon’, is part of the cluster ‘Decentralization and Good Governance’ in Cameroon and the EU Multiannual Indicative Planning 2021-2027. It focuses on the organizational strengthening of Cameroon’s civil society to promote gender-transformative approaches, especially in the Anglophone areas of Northwest and Southwest, where armed clashes between separatists and the government have been taking place since 2016 based on socio-political tensions in post-colonial Cameroon. Two of the three components of the project are being implemented in this region and are intended to support local civil society in promoting social cohesion and livelihoods among the population and curbing gender-based violence. In the first component, civil society is supported across Cameroon, with a focus on national and regional network structures to strengthen the organizational capacities of civil society.

Your tasks

  • Selection of civil society partners for the gender-sensitive and gender-transformative approaches in North-West and South-West based on the assessment of the project and existing partner relations
  • Accompanying and advising the partner organizations in the organization of dialogues at community level to promote social cohesion and identify needs in economic resilience and to strengthen equal chances and rights for women and vulnerable groups
  • Coordination with the GBV cluster under leadership of the United Nations Population Fund to identify needs for improved coordination amongst local support providers and referral mechanisms
  • Specific capacity building on financial management and organizational development for partner organizations through trainings and continuous advice
  • Analysis of providers for income generating activities and other supporters of economic resilience, from civil society but also the local private sector
  • Selection and accompanying of these activities for communities, especially women and survivors of GBV
  • Work with partners in the Northwest region from Bamenda and complement with the national advisors and the rest of the technical project team for the scope of the project area and support joint activities across the anglophone regions

Your profile

  • Master’s degree in a social or economic science, gender studies, development studies or health
  • First professional experience in working in organizational development in the areas of civil society or gender equality-Knowledge on social cohesion, GBV, economic vulnerability
  • Several years of professional experience in development or intercultural cooperation, experience in conflictual contexts and with traumatized target groups
  • Disposition to be based in a conflict area under supervision of the GIZ risk management and with alternative models in case of non-accessibility of certain areas
  • Excellent ability to work in a team environment, including close cooperation with partner organizations
  • High degree of self-organization and structured working method-Intercultural Competence
  • Knowledge of the country and especially the situation in the anglophone regions
  • Business fluent in English, knowledge of French and German is an advantage

Location information

We are pleased to offer you a first impression on topics such as climate, shopping and services, the school situation and health care in Cameroon. The climate in Bamenda is tropical with rainy periods and high temperatures but pleasant because of proximity to mountains. Basic medical care is guaranteed in Bamenda, further options are available in Buea, Douala and Yaoundé. The security situation in Cameroon requires increased vigilance.

The security situation is tense. Tailored security risk mitigation measures are in place for GIZ staff in country. GIZ staff must adhere to security measures at all times. Please also check the county-specific information provided by the German Federal Foreign Office. GIZ runs a professional security risk management system in the field of deployment. The freedom of movement is restricted. GIZ does not impose any restrictions on life partners and family members to move with you to the country of deployment. Please note that the general and personal living conditions in the country of assignment may meet with different legal and social acceptance. We gladly support you with our many years of experience.

At the site of operation, the particulate pollution occurs to be many time higher than the European acceptable limit. As part of the selection process and during the recruitment examination you will be informed of appropriate protective and behavioral measures.

Notes

GIZ’s Development Service is looking forward to applications of candidates with a professional qualification and / or university degree and at least two years of professional experience. In addition you hold the German nationality or the nationality of a member state of the European Union.

Willingness to travel on a regular basis is required.
