About CHRDA

The Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa (CHRDA) is a Civil Society, Human Rights and Humanitarian Organization established in 2005 with the mission to enhance the promotion, protection and respect of human rights and democracy in Africa. As part of CHRDA’s strategic plan to promote and protect human rights and the rule of law, CHRDA embarks on several projects covering different thematic including gender and women’s rights, peace and democracy, human rights monitoring, documenting and reporting, humanitarian aid, research and empowerment. We offer a range of services to vulnerable persons, minorities, conflict victims, people affected by gender based violence and human rights violations, including psychosocial and legal support, well as empowering women and young people through capacity building, soft and hard skill acquisition. In other to foster and promote the respect of human rights and democracy, CHRDA has established partnerships with several institutions, while operating in close proximity with local, regional, national and international organizations.

Description and Context

CHRDA was established in 2005, and since then the organization has been participating relentlessly in promoting a positive culture for Human Rights and Democracy in Cameroon. Since 2016, the Anglophone regions in Cameroon have been plagued with an arm conflict that continue to claim lives, destroy civilian property, displacing and leaving many people vulnerable. In other to strengthen communication and access to public information in accordance with CHRDA’s Advocacy plan of upscaling communication, outreach and program development within the conflict regions of Cameroon, CHRDA is seeking a translator, with key functions of: translating documents; publications and advocacy materials; strategic communication analysis; project/program coherence, sustainability and coordination; social media management; strategic partnership; advisory services; strategy and activity formation; innovation, knowledge management and public information.

Duties and Responsibilities

The translator will be part of the communication unit at CHRDA, reporting directly to the lead in communications. He/she will liaise with partners such as GIZ, OSF, NED, UN agencies and other relevant stakeholders, civil societies and government partners in implementing the following duties and responsibilities.

  • Work collaboratively with the communication team and other relevant units to translate documents and publications from English to French and vice versa.
  • Support in social media management and content production for digital platforms and website writing in English and French.
  • Support in the production of advocacy notes/strategies, multimedia material, communication plans, documents and other relevant task as assigned.
  • Participate in program design and coordination including, organizing high level meetings, webinars, workshops, seminars and media outreach with stakeholders, CSOs and diplomatic missions.
  • Support the overall and day to day functioning and implementation of office activities.

Education

We are looking for someone with at-least a BSc in Translation, English modern letters, French studies, Communication or any other related field. With a proven track record of past experience. Having a Master’s degree is desirable but not a requirement.

What are we looking for?

The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications:

Language proficiency: The candidate should be proficient in English and French, open to learning and growth through active participation in task alignment and project implementation.

Experience: The candidate should have at least 2 years of experience in translation, social media management, program development and coordination. Experience in a human rights, development or humanitarian context, will be of added advantage.

Attention to detail: The candidate should have excellent attention to detail and be able to produce accurate translations, following the house style, format and procedures in reporting at CHRDA.

Time management: The candidate should be able to manage their time effectively, have the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Communication skills: The candidate should have excellent communication skills and be able to work collaboratively with others.
