2 min read

On 28 May 2021, Lesley’s Foundation joins the International community to commemorate World Menstrual Hygiene Day commemorated annually on May 28. This year’s commemoration was under the theme was “Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health.” which highlights the need to support women and girls during menstruation.

In Partnership with Recover and Rehabilitate for a Better Tomorrow (REREHABET), they took the opportunity to educate girls in the Recover and Rehabilitate for a Better Tomorrow centre in Buea, the South West region of Cameroon wherein orphans and the underprivileged children are taken admitted and catered for.

During the event, sanitary pads were distributed to the girls and they were also drilled on how and when to use them. Menstruation is an integral and normal part of human life. Menstrual hygiene is fundamental to the dignity and wellbeing of women and girls and an important part of the basic hygiene, sanitation, and reproductive health services to which every woman and girl has right.

“Every month, 1.8 billion people across the world menstruate. Millions of these girls, women, transgender men and non-binary persons are unable to manage their menstrual cycle in a dignified, healthy way” (UNICEF)

To contribute to addressing the above problem, the Lesley Foundation and its partners launch a campaign “One Girl One Pad” to support women and girls with pads and educate them on how to manage menstruation through community conversations.
